Raoul Casadei with behind his Sun Ship
Raoul Casadei was not only the "King of the Smooth", composer and interpreter of popular music that brought the Romagna genre to national success. It was also a visionary entrepreneur capable of transforming a local tradition into a cultural and commercial phenomenon of great importance. His volcanic and creative personality led him to develop original ideas and new projects, ranging from the creation of spectacular events to pioneer marketing operations for his time.

The Sun Ship, launched in 1984, made three mini cruisers a day with live music every night. Carolina Casadei, an animator on board all the 80s, created themed parties from dawn to night. In the 1990s, Mirko Casadei debuted at the microphone on that showboat before collecting the Orchestra’s best man.
The Traveling Reggia
The Traveling Reggia
One of the most iconic inventions of Raoul Casadei is what has been renamed by the press Reggia Traveling, a tailor-made coach to ensure maximum comfort to the Orchestra during long tours through Italy. Every year, the group traveled thousands of kilometres, making a stop in a real travelling journey of music. This bus was equipped with large seats, comfortable and completely reclining, with personal tables and power outlets, a real luxury for the time. In those years there was no digital cell phones or platforms and this level of technology was really extraordinary.

On board were a well-stocked minibar, a smoking area, a cosy lounge, a wardrobe and even a make-up corner. Under the bus, large spaces were reserved for musical instruments and equipment for shows.
To ensure uninterrupted travel, the bus had two drivers alternating with the guide and two carnations dedicated to the loading and unloading and mounting of the instrumentation for the concerts. The coach was regularly replaced with a newer model, to travel safely and equip it with the latest technologies, as one of the first portable travel phones: a really heavy model with a range of only 30 minutes.
The coach was also equipped with loudspeakers connected to a record player – a technological detail of great effect at the time, when there were still no music, CD or MP3. When the Orchestra arrived in the countries for concerts, the speakers sounded famous songs like Hello Sea, Romagna and Sympathy. Fans, already lined up to ensure a good position for the show, started dancing and singing in the streets, turning the Orchestra’s arrival into a festive event.

In 1975 Raoul had an ambitious idea: to create a gigantic place to which everyone could easily access, without exclusions. The project was born Centro Internazionale Ca’ del Liscio, located in the countryside. This disco, a large structure suspended on columns, represented a revolution for the time: a multipurpose center that housed congress halls, restaurants, bars, entertainment areas and an impressive concert hall with a huge stage and dance floor. The hall, designed with amphitheatre, entirely in step and without any column, ensured a perfect view of the shows from each location.
In this extraordinary location, internationally renowned artists such as Ray Charles, Vasco Rossi, Raffaella Carrà, Renato Zero and Grace Jones performed. RAI turned the structure into a television studio for sports and special New Year events broadcast in national live. Every evening, coaches full of fans arrived from all over Italy, attracting the attention of the media that nicknamed the place the Mecha of the Ball.

What is the Smooth
The musical genre Raoul Casadei has renamed "Liscio" is a set of rhythms and dances born at the end of the nineteenth century. Evolution of ancient popular traditions, combines elements of waltz, mazurka and polka, giving rise to an immersive and festive rhythm. Thanks to figures like Secondo and Raoul Casadei, this genre spread throughout Italy, becoming a symbol of the Romagna identity and the pleasure of dancing together.
Musical instruments of the Liscio orchestras
The orchestras of the Liscio are characterized by an unmistakable sound based on instruments such as violin and accordion, which give warmth and melody to the music and the clarinet in Do typical of the dance orchestras whose ringing sound fits perfectly between the melodic instruments.
Once the Liscio was instrumental and the Orchestra Casadei was the first to introduce the figure of a singer whose voice was initially amplified by a megaphone.
The Dances of the Liscio
The Smooth includes three main dances: the waltz, with its elegant and circular movement;
the mazurka, with rhythm cadenzato and engaging; and the polka, lively and dynamic. These dances dance in pairs, following the steps and rhythm of the Orchestra, creating an atmosphere of celebration and conviviality. Diffused in popular dance halls and festivals, the Liscio continues to be a meeting point between generations, keeping alive the tradition.

The Ship of the Sun
The Ship of the Sun
In the 1980s, Raoul brought the dance to the sea along the Riviera Romagnola with the Ship of the Sun, a motorship-Showboat that could accommodate up to 250 people (although often the number exceeded 300). The motorship with a lot of small stage, DJ corner and dance floor, offered themed parties, dance competitions, dance courses and even fishing in the high sea with fish fries prepared at the moment. The cheerful atmosphere attracted people from all over Italy and often hosted television recordings for RAI and Mediaset.
